Taxus baccata is a conifer widespread in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere and is widely used in the ornamental sector. The leaves and twigs contain diterpene alkaloids, lignans, flavonoids and steroids; They are used in the pharmaceutical industry for the presence of 10-deacetylbaccatin III from which to semi-synthesis is achieved an important anticancer agent, taxol.
This molecule is used in the treatment of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, small cell lung cancer at an advanced stage and AIDS-related Kaposi’s sarcoma. The dried leaves are used by the pharmaceutical industry to isolate precursors for anti-cancer medicines like Paclitaxel and Docetaxel.
